The Rangoonwala Community Centre

The Community Centre was built in 1971 in Karachi at a prime location. Inauguration of the centre was performed by our Trustee Mrs. Banu M. A. Rangoonwala on 15th November, 1971.

The late Founder and Managing Trustee, Mr. M. A. Rangoonwala in his welcome address said that ‘The establishment of this centre is the culmination of a long cherished desire and I sincerely hope that this centre will be of some service to the people, especially those with limited means’.

   

Since 1971 the ZVMG Rangoonwala Community Centre has been serving humanity to its utmost. Late Mr. Behram Rustamji was its first Executive Head, succeeded by Mr. Azizur Rehman in 1986. The community centre provides numerous facilities under one roof. It is a ground plus three storeyed building. It lodges in it: The Education Programme, a Centrally Air-Conditioned Auditorium, A Library, Study Centre, The Mother & Child Care Centre, the Duke of Edinburgh’s award Programme and the Zonal Office of the Pakistan Women Lawyer’s Association (PAWLA).

Adult Education Programme

 

Around 250,000 ladies have been trained since 1971 in different trades. Under the Education Programme offering over 60 vocational courses in different fields and trades. These courses are designed in such a way that after completion, the students can start their own earnings or  just use

them as their hobbies. Numerous young women are earning their livelihood or supplementing their family income due to the training they had at the centre.

Above 14,000 students are registered here annually and to accommodate more students, the Community Centre recently added a ground plus three floors building to the present facilities.  All the laboratories and classes are fully equipped with modern educational equipment and facilities.

Whether one wants to learn for personal development or educational enlightenment or to enhance ones earning capacity, be it for your own self or to help others, the ZVMG Rangoonwala Community Centre is there to provide a course. The Centre also actively encourages and supports people with disabilities or handicaps to attend courses.  To facilitate students from lower income groups to take advantage of courses conducted at the centre, fees for all courses have been kept very low. The centre is heavily subsidized by the Trust. Concessions are also available to deserving candidates. The deficits of V.M. Public School and the Rangoonwala Centre are in excess of Rs.10 million annually and are subsidized by the Trust. This does not include the grants awarded to other projects in and out of the country.

Currently the centre is conducting 6 different types of courses namely:Regular Courses, Short Courses, Computer Courses, Crash Courses, One Day Cooking Courses and Summer Vacation Programme. These courses cover almost every hobby and students are being trained as professionals in their fields.

V. M. Library & Reading Room

The Library contains more than 7000 books in English, Urdu and Gujrati, covering many subjects. The Reading Room is supplied with all well-known daily Newspapers as well as weekly and monthly magazines. Books can also be borrowed against deposit of caution money.

V. M. Art Gallery

It was developed in 1987 and has gained the reputation of promoting young artists and hosting prestigious inernational exhibitions. This is a non-commercial art gallery which not only exhibits the work of senior artists but also promotes budding

artists.  Recently, it has been renovated and more space has been added to it to make it the largest and fully equipped private art gallery of Pakistan.

Zuleikhbai Child Care Centre & Dispensary
Medical & related services are offered to mothers and children upto age 7, at nominal charges. Children are given all the preventive vaccinations.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme is aimed at enhancing the leadership potential of young people between the ages 14-25 years.

Fully Air-Conditioned Hall with balcony and a courtyard are available for weddings, conferences & Seminars etc. The Hall can accommodate 700 persons.
